Monday Feb 22- Big Stripers in the boat for 3 Days Running!
It's cold but they're hitting my giant baits from 7:00 to 10:00AM
Drifting large baits in 20 to 35 feet accross the drop offs is bringing in the 10 pounders this week. On our first drift on the 22nd we had 4 on at once. Get the biggest bait you can find, at least 6 inch shad, and "drift and drag" No early hook sets here, if you don't let them mouth the bait, you won't hook up.

February 1 to 7
Fishing has improved a bunch in the past week. The water temp. is about 44 degrees and there's lot of muddy areas west of Hwy. 337. The fish are on the clear side in 40 to 50 feet of water. Live bait is still easy to get if you can beat the striper to them in the mornings.
I went to get bait on Thursday and caught striper on every throw. On Friday took a fishing pole and caught 8 striper up to 10 pounds under the lights of the marina.
If you can't locate bait you can take a "super fluke" and drift it off the side of boat. Just put it down to the fish and let get drift along (dead stick). On Friday we put 67 fish up to 8 pounds in the boat.

Tough, Cold Fishing - End of January
It has been very cold the first couple of weeks of the month. The fish that were biting in
25 to 35 ft. water have slowed way down. The water just got too cold. So I started going out to 60 to 75ft. water off the north end of the islands fishing three or four turns off bottom.
The bite is soft. Live bite have gotten hard to find, again, because of the water temperature, but if you can get it you're a lot better off and will catch fish. Get up a little earlier and try to get some bait in the boat!
Jig fishing off humps is your next best method. The best time is in the afternoons.
The fish are still biting a bit, and when the water comes up a few more degrees they're going to be real hungry.

Big Fish - December 13 to 23
|
 |
The bigger stripers are biting up on the west end of the lake. Every trip in the last two weeks has produced the best fish we've caught all year. One fish was 36 in. long and we're catching a lot in the 28 to 32 in. range.
I'm using the biggest bait I can find. The fish are in about 30ft of water at about 25ft. but you need to fish them 12 to 14ft off bottom. In the off colored water you fish them shallower than you see them. |
Go off the north end in 58 to 65ft. of water and fish with bait about 4ft. off the bottom or slow roll a sassy or slab off bottom.
You can't fish too slow with the lures.
Another technique that has been working is to hook your bait in the back and cut a slit ... >> full

fishing Nov.21 to Dec12
Fishing the last couple of weeks been a little on the cold side.
The fish we're catching now are bigger than they have been all year. In the last few days we've caught four fish in the 12 to 16 pound class. It's the colder water folks and the colder it gets the better the fishing will be.
Even the smallest fish we're catching would have been in the mid-range earlier in the season. The best fish have been caught on live bait but the the birds are working and you can use lures under them.
Bait has been a lot easier to get lately, it's available day long in the coves on the west end of the lake.
